How to adjust training wheels
The purpose of training wheels is to provide stability while the rider learns to balance. At the very beginning, the training wheels can be touching the ground on both sides so the rider can focus on managing the bike.
As confidence grows however, you can adjust the training wheels up so they only touch the ground as the rider starts to tip. This helps develop balance skills. Progress this height until the rider no longer needs them at all.
Find the adjustment mechanism
Look for the bolts or nuts that secure the training wheels to the rear axle of the bicycle. They are usually located on either side of the rear wheel.
Loosen the bolts
Use the wrench to loosen the bolts or nuts just enough to allow movement of the training wheels. You don't need to remove them completely.
Adjust the height
Determine the desired height for the training wheels. It's generally recommended to start with the wheels set slightly above the ground to provide stability. You can gradually raise them as the rider gains confidence and balance.
Align the training wheels
Ensure that both training wheels are aligned parallel to the ground and perpendicular to the bicycle frame. This alignment is essential for proper balance and stability.
Tighten the bolts
Once you've adjusted the height and alignment, securely tighten the bolts or nuts with the wrench. Make sure they are tight enough to prevent the training wheels from shifting during use.
Test the adjustment
Have the rider mount the bicycle and try riding with the training wheels. Observe the stability and balance. If further adjustments are needed, readjust until the desired balance is found.
